SaskTel announces their 4G devices are now available on Prepaid

Certainly not the biggest news but SaskTel has now made their 4G devices available on PrePaid. If you’re not into contracts and opt to purchase the device outright you can now do so, but you’ll have to fork out a bit for their prepaid plans. In addition, SaskTel prepaid is currently only available in Saskatchewan, roaming for some reason has not been set up yet, but “SaskTel anticipates that roaming outside Saskatchewan will be available in 2012 once roaming agreements are in place”. Prepaid data plans start at $15 for 150 MB and goes up to 3GB for $50. Talk and Text plans begin at $18/month and they also have a Prepaid BlackBerry Talk, Text & Data Plan for $40/month. Good to have options.

China readies its own space station module for launch
Presumably feeling a little left out after being turned down from the global love-in that is the International Space Station, China’s decided to go it alone. The ever-expanding nation will be ready to launch the first module of it’s very own space station, the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace), by the end of this month. The initial launch will be unmanned, delivering an 8.5-ton module ready for docking practise and other interactions with three more spacecraft that are planned to join it later this year. Pegged for completion by 2020 and with a complete weight of over 60 tons, the Tiangong will look positively petite compared to the hulking 419-ton ISS, but is also said to be significantly cheaper. Meanwhile, we still await China’s take on the Robonaut.

Boeing officially delivers 787 Dreamliner to ANA, future of air travel finally arrives
It’s the plane so nice, they unveiled it twice. Boeing once again presented its long-awaited and much-delayed 787 Dreamliner to client All Nippon Airways, but this time the goods were officially delivered. After taking the wraps off the airliner early this August, the aerospace company managed to get a flight-ready unit over to its Everett, Washington production plant for a celebratory hand-off. Despite a fit of stops and starts for the line’s rollout, Boeing expects to meet ANA’s order of its future 55-strong fleet, producing an additional 20 craft for the Japanese airline by 2013’s end. If you want to be among the select few to call “First!,” you might want to consider booking that Japan-bound vacation now.

Apple Has Been Denied the Multitouch Trademark [Apple]
It’s not hyperbolic to say that Apple introduced multitouch to the masses with the iPhone. Apple thought that they could trademark it. Unfortunately for them, the United States Patent and Trademark Office thought differently. They’ve denied Apple the multitouch trademark. More »

Galaxy Tab 8.9 hits pre-order, ships October 2nd in US; Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 shipping October 16th
Hot on the heels of a UK release, Samsung has just announced that its long-awaited (and long-delayed) Galaxy Player 4.0 ($229) and 5.0 ($269) will be available for pre-order starting September 27th, with US availability pegged for October 16th. Oddly enough, Samsung gave no reason behind the once-spring, now-autumn pushback, but at least we can finally stop wondering and instead start enjoying the spoils of an (almost) Galaxy Note-sans-phone. (Not like we haven’t heard a similar tune before). All that aside, the Player 5.0 and 4.0 weigh in at 6.4 and 4.2 ounces, respectively, and both are powered by Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread); other specs include 802.11b/g/n, WVGA Super Clear LCDs (800 x 480), Bluetooth 3.0, 8GB of onboard storage, a microSD expansion slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, voice recorder, mini-USB connectivity, front and rear cameras and support for Sammy’s Media Hub content service. The big fellow gets a 2,500mAh battery, whereas its little(r) brother is equipped with a 1,200mAh cell. (Psst… you can catch our hands-on with these here and here.)
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is available for pre-sale right now, with shipments to hit retail on October 2nd. You’ll be laying down $469 for the 16GB model, while a doubling of capacity will run you $100 more. Need a refresher on this one, too? How’s about a WXGA (1,280 x 800) touchpanel, dual-core T250S processor, 6,100mAh battery, sub-one pound weight, DLNA compatibility, a 3 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, integrated Swype / Polaris Office and even a few amenities for those in the enterprise — things like full support for Exchange ActiveSync (v14), on-device encryption, Cisco VPN, Sybase MDM and WebEx support. Best of all, the inbuilt FindMyMobile service allows users to track their lost / stolen Tab 8.9 down on a map as it moves, remotely lock the device to prevent unauthorized access and delete personal information stored on the device. Head on past the break for the full release.

Daffy Duck is a Lazy Metal Wizard
(You’re not dreaming, this is an actual segment from the new Loony Toons series)
The idea of a new Loony Toons series was one of utter bullshit to me…until they went and did something as awesome as this. Simply titled Daffy Duck: The Wizard, this clip will bring out any headbanger’s inner child between four minutes of metal music.
Mixing everyday technologies with Daffy’s hugely inflated ego, Warner Bros. made the single greatest Loony Toons clip of the year. It’ll make you want to throw on a denim vest and throw up a pair of Dio sized devil horns.
Rock on Daffy.

Facebook Is Tracking Your Every Move on the Web; Here’s How to Stop It [Facebook]

YouTube to get regularly scheduled channels, try on traditional TV suit?
What’s old is new again. Or, is it that content is still king? We could never keep those Web 2.0 arguments straight, but from the sound of this latest YouTube rumor, ol’ Mountain View might be moonwalking into an old media model. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google’s been hustling to get contracts for a lineup of regularly scheduled channels ironed out “within the next 60 days.” That sort of timeline would indicate a likely early 2012 bow for a refresh of the online video hub made famous by piano-playing cats, and a certain viral surprise in an SNL-made box. While on-demand digital video sites are nothing new in the crowded, streaming marketplace, a move like this could firmly position the search giant as the king of place-shifted, live viewing, and cause more potential headaches for its broadcast and cable competitors. With an in-house production studio already under its wing, courtesy of that Next New Networks acquisition, Google’s entrance into the big, bad world of entertainment could be on its interwebbed way.

Doritos Creator Dies — Gets Tastiest Funeral EVER!!
Filed under: R.I.P., Arch West, Exclusive Details, Famous Food

The SNACK GOD who invented DORITOS has passed away … but TMZ has learned his funeral is nacho average ceremony … ’cause the guy will be buried with 3 FLAVORS of his prized invention.
Arch West — the 97-year-old ex-Frito-Lay legend — died last week, and his daughter announced the family plans on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn” when he is buried.
TMZ spoke with West’s son-in-law … who tells us the family will use Original, Cool Ranch and Nacho flavored Doritos, since those were West’s favorite. He was NOT a fan of the Cheeseburger flavor, so those will not be used.
According to his daughter, West came up with the idea for Doritos during a family vacation to San Diego … when he discovered a snack shack selling fried tortilla chips in 1961.
Snack strong in heaven, Arch.
Future Apple products to incorporate curved glass design?

Curved glass is all the rage these days, as evinced by the concave nature of the Samsung Nexus S and the convex nature of the HTC Sensation. According to a report by DigiTimes, Apple could be hopping on the bandwagon after sourcing curved glass parts from Corning, who supplies the industry with its popular Gorilla Glass.
Devices are not expected to go on sale with the new tech until 2012, but both the iPhone and iPad stand to benefit from the integration. OEMs argue that curved glass allows for smoother interaction between the finger and the display, as well as fewer light reflections and easier-to-read text.
Previous devices, such as the fourth- and fifth-generation iPod Nano shipped with curved screens, subtly improving the display aesthetic on the tiny media player.
DigiTimes claims that “suppliers of the non-Apple camp are working on products with curved cover glass in attempts to gain a competitive edge in the handheld device market dominated by Apple” and it would behoove Apple to beat them at their own game.

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 gets priced, goes on sale in UK
Sure, it may not be as exciting as those two LTE beasts from Samsung that we saw earlier today, but the Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 has crept on sale in the land of crumpets, Coldplay and some Middleton couple (we jest!). According to reviews on Amazon UK, it appears a lucky few have already got their hands on one, but they're now available en masse; expect to fork out just shy of £200 ($310) for the five-inch media player. The Galaxy S WiFi 5.0 already feels a bit smaller after seeing the giant 5.3-inch Galaxy Note in action, and the software is a bit dated, arriving with Froyo-flavored Android. There’s no news about a Gingerbread update hitting this one just yet (though we’ve been told it’s upgradable), but Android 2.2 should be more than enough to tackle its veritable smorgasbord of app-based delights, alongside some smartphone-esque tech specs like Bluetooth and, naturally, WiFi.
[Thanks, Cliff]
