Android is becoming popular, Gartner Research estimated their total market share in Q2 2011 hit 43.4%. In Canada, the only stat that we have is from a March 2011 comScore report that found users who adopted Google’s Android OS as their primary smartphone was 12.2%.

Today, Motorola Canada has come out with a stats that shows continued Android adoption. In a press release, heavily promoting the business features of the ATRIX 4G, they stated that “According to third party research commissioned by Motorola Mobility, close to 40 per cent of Canadian company decision makers across all company sizes are considering Android smartphones for business use.”

There was no background on how many decision makers were contacted, where or when the research was conducted. We’ve reached out to Motorola for a bit more insight into what made up the 40%, simply because that’s huge number. I guess “considering” is the key word there, and not transitioned. The comScore report showed Canadians use BlackBerry devices the most, an incredible 42% of smartphone subscribers.

Eating more chocolate could reduce the risk of developing heart disease by 37 per cent, a report in the British Medical Journal suggests.

The Sony Tablet, aka the Sony S1 or Tablet S, is coming to Canada and it looks like the release date could either be September 14th or 15th. According to this invite that Sony Canada sent out states that “The new Sony Tablet is about to arrive in Canada. As a valued customer, we would like YOU to see it first!”. No details on pricing or where we’ll be able to pick one up, but most likely from the Sony Style Stores and big box stores like Best Buy and Future Shop (unconfirmed). This tablet comes with Android 3.1 Honeycomb, 9.4-inch touchscreen display (resolution of 1280×800), Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, PlayStation certified, Wi-Fi, and DLNA. Apparently there will be a 16GB and 32GB models and no insight if there will be a 3G/4G version.

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a “chunky design” isn’t bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba’s expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year’s model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba’s new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.

Android: I’ve often given my son my phone to play Angry Birds, and at least twice he’s managed to delete contacts or emails. Android Parental Control helps users lockdown their phones so kids can only use apps that you have approved; an admin password is required to access any restricted app. Additionally, the app can be set to launch as soon as the phone boots so clever kids can’t get around the restrictions by rebooting the phone.
