HTC Flyer launching in Canada for $499.99

It’s been anticipated for months that the Wi-Fi version of the HTC Flyer will be available to Canadians, but we can finally say this tablet is actually coming really soon. We’re still waiting on hearing what the official launch date is but HTC’s first Android tablet will hit retail locations across Canada for $499.99 outright. From what we understand the Flyer will come with OS 2.3.3 Gingerbread, have a 7-inch display, 1.5 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera with a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. No word yet on the complete distribution but most likely it’ll be at all the usual retail outlets and big box stores.

More soon!
(Thanks tipster!)

Logitech officially drops Revue price to $99 today, clarifies ‘more returns than sales’ remark

Google TV not worth 300 bones to ya? How’s about a cool Benjamin? As promised, Logitech has slashed the price of its Revue set-top box from $299 to $99 on its own site and at retailers like Best Buy, giving prospective customers something awfully tempting to consider alongside the prospect of running Honeycomb on their TV right away. Oh, and the much-reported nugget from its earnings about “returns exceeding sales”? It should probably be noted that wasn’t about returns from end users, which the company claims “have averaged at levels comparable to other Logitech products”, but from the distributors and retailers it sells most of its hardware to. So, you in, or are you still holding out for the 90 percent off sale that may or may not ever materialize?

DNA-based artificial neural network is a primitive brain in a test tube (video)

Neuron and DNA

Many simpler forms of life on this planet, including some of our earliest ancestors, don’t have proper brains. Instead they have networks of neurons that fire in response to stimuli, triggering reactions. Scientists from Caltech have actually figured out how to create such a primitive pre-brain using strands of DNA. Researchers, led by Lulu Qian, strung together DNA molecules to create bio-mechanical circuits. By sequencing the four bases of our genetic code in a particular way, they were able to program it to respond differently to various inputs. To prove their success the team quizzed the organic circuit, essentially playing 20 questions, feeding it clues to the identity of a particular scientist using more DNA strands. The artificial neural network nailed answer every time. Check out the PR and pair of videos that dig a little deeper into the experiment after the break.

System Administrator Appreciation Day is here, show them some love (or suffer the consequences)

Sysadmin

Last year, on July 29th, we asked you to show a little love to your sysadmin because, without them, our world would probably come to a screeching halt. We suggested a card, or at least a polite nod in the hallway. Instead, you went all out and actually gave them a bit of raise. That doesn’t mean you can let System Administrator Appreciation Day slip by this year without acknowledgment, however. We’re not saying you’ve got to outdo yourselves and get them some sort of super yacht — a simple thanks will do. But, they probably wouldn’t mind a repeat of last year’s gift either.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet gets an August 23rd release

Lenovo had a bit of an issue saving the date for its summer tablet launch, but no longer. Confirmed via a product page on the company’s site, its Honeycomb-flavored ThinkPad Tablet will finally hit retailers’ shelves on August 23rd. If you’re not into waiting that long, you can always snag the IdeaPad K1 — we hear Lisa Stansfield recommends it.

New Google Search experience for tablets

(Cross-posted on the Inside Search blog)

As part of our effort to evolve the Google design and experience, we’ve improved the www.google.com search experience on tablets. We’ve simplified the layout of search results pages and increased the size of page contents like text, buttons and other touch targets to make it faster and easier to browse and interact with search results in portrait or landscape view.

The search button located below the search box provides quick access to specific types of results like Images, Videos, Places, Shopping and more. Just tap to open the search menu and select an option to see results in one category.

For image results, we focused on improvements that enhance the viewing experience such as enlarged image previews, continuous scroll, and faster loading of image thumbnails.

This improved search experience is rolling out in the coming days to iPad and Android 3.1+ tablets across 36 languages. Give it a try by going to www.google.com in your tablet’s browser.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider priced in Portuguese catalog, manhandled on camera (video)

ASUS first showed off its Eee Pad Slider what seems forever ago. That was way, way back at CES, amongst the deluge of tablety announcements. The keyboard-hiding Honeycomb device is finally on its way, having been given an August release date in the UK and recently hitting the FCC in the States. The 10.1-inch tablet just popped up in the August catalog for the Phone House (the Carphone Warehouse's brand outside the UK) catalog in Portugal, priced at €349 ($497) under contract with ZON — that's down from €479 ($684) without contract. The forthcoming tablet also hammed it up for the camera recently — video of that after the break.

[Thanks, Zack and Pedro]

Gmail v2.3.5 for Android adds label-specific ringtones and sync priority mail only options

If you love Gmail and need to access it on the go, you probably already know that Google’s Android platform is the best way to do so, and with the new v2.3.5 it’s getting even better. The top two new features this time around include the ability to sync only priority messages (saving battery life and keeping unimportant messages at bay) and the ability to individually set notifications and ringtones for any of the labels in your inbox. The Android Market website is still showing version 2.3.4.1, but we successfully upgraded via the Market on our devices. Also new are features like remembering “Show Pictures” for specific senders, a toggle for sticky message actions in all orientations as well as improved overall performance and TalkBack screen reader support.

Update: The website is now showing all the details for 2.3.5, hit the source link to update or just check the official list after the break.
