Microsoft is being sued by Impulse Technology, a company that claims the Kinect violates seven of its patents for technology that tracks a user’s movement and allows them to play video games without a controller.

Impulse allegedly informed Microsoft before issuing the lawsuit, stating their patents covered a:

…wide variety of games where the movement of a player is tracked in three dimensions … and certain exercise games where the motion of the player is tracked to effect movement of a virtual avatar, and the exertion of the user is monitored, including where the tracking of the player is done by use of a camera.

But Microsoft isn’t the only target of this lawsuit — eight video game makers, including EA, Sega, and Konami, stand accused of making games designed for the Kinect system that violate Impulse’s patents.

Maybe Microsoft can use an army of motion-controlled helicopters to get them out of this.

Another tablet is almost upon us Canada… the Toshiba Thrive runs Android OS 3.1 Honeycomb and is now up for pre-order at Future Shop. This looks like it will be available on August 12th and as expected will retail for the following prices: 8GB version for $429; 16GB version for $479 and a 32GB version for $579.

A month ago Toshiba stated that this will be called the “Toshiba Tablet”, but has opted to follow the United States in their branding of the 10.1-inch tablet. Specs have it coming with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Wi-Fi a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video calling and a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, weighs a bit on the hefty side at 750 grams and has a battery life of 7 hours. Something that makes this a bit unique and sets it apart from all the other Android tablets is that the back cover can be replaced and you can changes colour: Blue Moon, Raspberry Fusion, Lavender Bliss, Silvery Sky and Green Apple are all the flavours to choose from.

Google wants to keep its third-party app developers ‘appy by letting them upload multiple APKs to the Android Market under a single product title. This means developers can subtly offer different versions of their app to suit different devices and OS versions without having to worry about mixed-up download stats, user reviews or billing data. They can also tailor their software to exploit the capabilities of a new handset or tablet without having to mess with their existing customers. What will the App Guy have to say about this?

Google Labs isn’t the only thing winding down in Mountain View, it seems Google’s Firefox toolbar is also kaput. Citing exponential growth in the browser space, the outfit declared that the Google toolbar for Firefox is no longer necessary — modern browsers are just too darn capable. Support will continue for older versions of the browser, but Firefox 5 will have to stand on its own. Still, El Goog admits that dropping the toolbar kills more than a few features, and is offering a list of similarly featured add-ons to users via the defunct toolbar’s help page. Not enough? As for the rest of us, it’s not like we didn’t know Google had its own browser (and interests) to take care of, right?
