Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 land on shelves, deliver Gingerbread without the phone

Galaxy Player 4.0

Right on schedule the Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 have made their way into retail channels and are ready to deliver their particular brand of phone-less Gingerbread right to your greasy little fingers. Both devices sport a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via a microSD slot as well as the usual bundle of Sammy customizations, like TouchWiz and Media Hub. The only difference between the two PMPs is size and price, with the 5-inch model coming in at $270 and the 4-inch a more modest $230. You can pick both up at your local electronics retailer, such as the one that claims to be the best, right now.

Canadian Copyright Reform Back With Vengeance

Although Bill C-11 appears to be more flexible than the previous attempts at copyright reform, this bill is flawed to its core by the inclusion of strict, anti-circumvention provisions. Understandably, Canadians are concerned at how easily their rights are trumped by the overriding protection for digital locks included in this legislation and it is to this effect that the CCER has updated its online letter writing tool. It is essential that Canadians speak out about their concerns with Bill C-11 while it is still open to amendments.

Samsung sells 30 million Galaxy S, Galaxy S II phones

Apple may have succeded to successfully block the sales of select Samsung devices in a couple countries around the world but that hasn’t stopped the Galaxy series of phones from becoming an international hit. South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung, announced that sales of the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II have sold a whopping 30 million units worldwide between the two devices. The first generation Galaxy S has reached nearly 20 million, while its sequel, the Galaxy S II recently passed the 10 million mark.

Samsung also reports that the GSII is Sammy’s fastest selling device to date, only taking five months to break 10 million units sold. Adding to the success story, the GSII received various accolades such as the ‘Mobile Choice’ and ‘Consumer Award’ 2011, and the ‘Phone of the Year’ title from the Gadget Awards 2011.

30 million consumers can’t be wrong, if you are one of them sound off in the comment field below.

BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB placed on the “to be discontinued” list

At last count RIM reported BlackBerry PlayBook shipments reached 700,000 in 6 months. This number is certainly not up to par with all the other tablets that saturated the market in the last year, but RIM always stated the PlayBook is the “world’s first professional-grade tablet”. The price points of all models recently received a price drop, which was well accepted, but owners are still waiting for native email, calendar and contacts to appear. The last rumour was from Bloomberg’s sources who pegged a September availability for these features.

The good news is that RIM is “highly committed to the tablet market” and will be releasing new versions of the PlayBook, most notably a 4G LTE PlayBook that should drop sometime “during the second half of 2011” (time is quickly running out). We’ve been given word that the 16GB version has been placed on the “to be discontinued” list. The screenshot is from TELUS and the doc shows the final date of returns is on November 8th and the last day to place orders is on October 10th. Finally, the date the PlayBook will no longer be available is currently blank, most likely will be that way until stock reduces. Bottom line, the 16GB is being discontinued and no indication of the 32GB or 64GB models.

(Thanks tipster!)

Ice Cream Sandwich may have a built-in photo editor to help your pictures turn out halfway decent

If you envision Ice Cream Sandwich — the latest iteration of Android — as a revolutionary update that satisfies every single one of your geeky lusts, we sure hope you’ve been aching for a photo editor. It appears that AndroidPolice has hunted down a variety of icons and logos presumed to be associated with the feature, but it’s not certain if these will actually appear in the final build. The icons hint at a smattering of image editing tools: crop, sharpen, flip, rotate and a selection of 19 possible photo effects are among the options. Again, this is highly speculative, and rumors such as these will likely ramp up as we approach the official announcement. ‘Course, we won’t scoff at the idea of a native photo editor in Ice Cream Sandwich, but we’re sincerely hoping this won’t be the coolest thing about the new OS at Tuesday’s announcement in Hong Kong.

[Thanks, Paul]

RIM offers free apps to make up for that whole BlackBerry outage thing

RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis has already apologized for last week’s widespread BlackBerry outage, but apparently, that wasn’t enough. Today, the manufacturer announced that it’s offering customers a full slate of “premium apps” for free, in the hopes of earning back some of the goodwill it lost following that mysterious blackout. In a statement, the company said the gesture is “an expression of appreciation” for the patience that many BlackBerry users demonstrated during the incident, with Lazaridis adding that his company remains “committed to providing the high standard of reliability” that consumers have come to expect. For now, the company’s offering a total of 12 apps (collectively valued at around $100), including SIMS 3, iSpeech Translator Pro and Shazam Encore among others, though more will be added at a later date. The offer kicks off on Wednesday and will last for a month, so head past the break to see which goodies are up for grabs.

Halo: Anniversary’s Kinect Functionality Is The Bomb. Literally.

So it looks like Halo: anniversary will have some additional goodies to go along with pre-order skull and 3D support. Namely, voice commands via Kinect.

In addition to smack-talking your friends, you’ll be able to make use of some very useful-sounding single-word commands, including ‘reload’, ‘analyze’, which will let players capture elements from the game to review in Halo: Anniversary’s ‘library’, and best of all, ‘grenade’, which will no doubt be the source of endless lulz. Naturally, you’ll need a Kinect to use them, but cool nonetheless.
