Windows 8 can run on an Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM

Curious what the minimum specifications for Windows 8 will be? As are we. Microsoft’s remaining mum on specifics, but the outfit’s Steven Sinofsky — President of Windows and Windows Live — just confessed during the opening Build 2011 keynote that an antediluvian Lenovo S10 was potent enough to run Windows 8. And in fact, it’ll do so with more poise than with Windows 7. A brief demonstration explained that Win8 demanded fewer system resources (barely, but still) than Win7 on the same hardware, proving that an early-gen Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM is “enough” to run the outfit’s upcoming operating system. We highly doubt it’s enjoyable, but at least you (probably) won’t be forced into an upgrade if you don’t want to be. Have a gander at the actual numbers just after the break!

AMD gets Guinness World Record for fastest CPU with overclocked octa-core FX processor

Speed. It’s of paramount importance in evaluating any computer system, and the engine that gives your PC its get up and go is its CPU. The folks at AMD wanted to show off just how awesome (and fast) their new Bulldozer-based FX chips can be, and set a Guinness World Record for the “Highest Frequency of a Computer Processor” while they were at it. To get the record, a team of “elite overclocking specialists” cranked up the juice on an 8-core desktop CPU until hitting a speed of 8.429GHz — handily surpassing the previous mark of 8.308GHz. So, AMD’s got the fastest silicon in the west and it’s chipping away at Intel’s processor predominance. What say you, Chipzilla?

Last week, it was announced that Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger would return for The Expendables 2 with expanded roles. Now, Sylvester Stallone confirms to EW that the long-rumored casting of Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme is also true. What’s more, the Face/Off pair of Nicolas Cage and John Travolta may be getting into the action as well.

“We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme,” Stallone told the outlet, “which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one.”

Co-written and directed by Stallone, the original Expendables also starred Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, David Zayas, Giselle Itie, Charisma Carpenter, Gary Daniels, Terry Crews and Mickey…

You Can’t Be Fired for Complaining About Your Boss on Facebook [In Brief]

You can't be fired for complaining about your workplace on social networks like Facebook—that's according to a judge's ruling and the National Labor Relations Act, which Forbes (and the judge) says gives employees “the right to converse among themselves about workplace conditions.” So the law’s on your side when it comes to complaining about work on the internet. Keep in mind though that there are a whole host of other serious consequences you may want to consider before you take that as a sign that now’s a good time to vent every frustration you have about your job. Asus Eee Pad Slider up for pre-order at Amazon, starting at $480

Still no official launch date for Asus’s funny-looking 10.1-inch hybrid, but we’ve already seen evidence of a September release and now there’s a whole drum-roll of pre-order pages up at Amazon. You’re looking at $580 for the 32GB model in white or mocha, or $100 less if you settle for the 16GB variant and cram the rest of your digital possessions onto microSD or — yes indeedy — some USB 2.0 external storage. Needless to say, all shades come with the same Tegra 2 processor, Honeycomb 3.2, 1GB of RAM, Mini HDMI out, a 5MP rear camera and 1.2MP front-facer. At this point, all these sliders need to do is turn up.

Update: Looks like Amazon pulled those pages and spoiled our fun.

[Thanks, Peter]

Ford Evos cloud-connected concept car unveiled at Frankfurt

The 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show doesn’t kick off until tomorrow, but already Ford’s unveiled the tasty hunk of conceptual automotive design it teased us with a few weeks back. It’s called the Evos, it’s loaded with technology and, while it doesn’t look much like any of the current autos you’ll find down at the local Blue Oval dealer, it’s actually said to be the precursor of a new model that’s coming in just four months time. Microsoft’s Mouse Without Borders: the KVM that killed the KVM (video)

Until now, running multiple computers with one keyboard and mouse has tended to require KVMs or wormholes, but Microsoft developer Truong Do has a better idea. Working at Microsoft’s Garage — Redmond’s after-hours pet project program — he built Mouse Without Borders: software that lets you control computers on the same wireless network with one set of inputs as if it was one machine with a multiple display. Up to four systems can be tied together and the software also provides for seamless drag-and-drop file transfer. Microsoft is releasing it free of charge at the source link, plus you can see Truong Do talking up his creation after the break.

GameStop to bring Android-based gaming tablet to market

No surprises here. GameStop, which announced its intentions to become a technology company earlier this spring, has officially selected Google’s Android OS for its upcoming tablet-based “certified gaming platform.” The video game retailer’s prexy Tony Bartel relayed the news to GamesIndustry.biz, and plans to sell the slate alongside offerings from industry heavyweights. The news comes on the heels of the company’s spring acquisition of developer Spawn Labs and Impulse, with a pre-production model design already selected for the tab. Expect the hardware to come pre-loaded with a handful of games, and to have a focus on an OnLive-like, cloud-based gaming platform. Consumers in Dallas were the first to get a hands-on with the beta device that should sport a custom designed inbuilt controller at launch. According to Bartel, “It’s hard to imagine how to stream a game – let’ say Modern Warfare 3 – onto a tablet and then play it with your finger.” The GameStop-made tab could also see third-party exclusives head to the platform, crafted with its controller interface in mind. Bartel made no mention of a release window, but it’s clear the company’s adapting to the industry’s digital download future. Hit up the source below for the full interview.
