A burp by the Android robot will destroy competitors potential patent lawsuits

Once Google’s $12.5 billion deal to buy Motorola Mobility officially gets approved they will amass their 17,000 patents, plus the other 7,500 that are currently pending. The Joy of Tech has weighed in on the situation and gives a good illustration of their potential power in the near future.

Did Apple shrink the Samsung Galaxy S in Dutch lawsuit filing?

We haven’t had a chance to head on down to The Hague to have a look-see for ourselves, but Dutch tech site Webwereld spotted some more inconsistencies in Apple’s Samsung lawsuit filings. This time the culprit is a shrunken Galaxy S, standing side-by-side with an identically tall iPhone 3G — when in reality the Samsung phone is seven millimeters taller than its Apple counterpart, and slightly wider as well. The image, filed in the Netherlands, is part of an intellectual property suit against Samsung, and came to light just days after accusations that Apple manipulated photos of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that it submitted to a German court. While misleading, this latest error isn’t nearly as concerning as last week’s shrunken Tab — which could easily be described as image manipulation, considering that the tablet included in that filing represented an incorrect 4:3 aspect ratio, while the Samsung device has a 16:10 display.

Update: The phone pictured above is the Samsung Galaxy S, not the Galaxy S II.

[Thanks, Florian]

YouTube adds Google+ Hangout button, lets you share videos with a click

Hangout video sharing is one of Google+’s more appealing features — not that we use it often, but when it comes to things to do in an online social gathering, watching YouTube clips would certainly rank near the top. Now you can launch Hangouts directly from YouTube, rather than heading over to Google+ and pasting in a link. Sure, it’s a simple tweak that probably took less than an hour to code, but it’s a clever addition nonetheless.

HP to “discontinue operations for webOS devices”

This is not good news for those who love the webOS platform. Rumours circulated today the HP was going to spin off their PC business to Autonomy Corporation. In a press release just minutes ago they stated that they’re “in discussions with Autonomy regarding a possible offer for the company”… but the bigger news in mobile for HP is their webOS platform. HP saved/purchased Palm months ago and also gobbled up their incredibly intuitive webOS platform. However, the press release sheds light on it’s gloom future:

“In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.”

With this news we’ll probably see webOS being licensed out to various manufacturers.
More soon (hopefully).

Samsung Nexus Prime serving up Ice Cream Sandwich in October?

The hunt for the next Nexus phone (also known as the Nexus Prime) is on, and it looks like we could see it donning Ice Cream Sandwich in time for Halloween. According to a report in Korea’s Electronic Times, those oh so familiar “insiders” are fingering an October launch for the Samsung handset. It will apparently rock a 4.5-inch HD AMOLED display and a 1.5GHz dual core processor, which squares mighty nicely with previous reports. Of course, we’ll believe it when we see it — or at least an official announcement — but for now, we’re keeping the Ice Cream Sandwich dream alive.

HP may spin off PC business, shift focus to software and services

HP LogoWord ’round the campfire is, HP may be prepping to spin off its PC business. Though Hewlett-Packard is the world’s largest computer company, desktops and laptops are a relatively low profit margin business. Obviously, there’s no confirmation yet that such a split will happen, but with the recent focus on tablets and smartphones, and CEO Leo Apotheker’s own admission that he’d like to expand into software and services, the move would make sense. According to Bloomberg the announcement could come as soon as today, during the company’s quarterly earnings call, where it’s also expected to reveal a $10 billion purchase of software company Autonomy Corp. We’ll be listening in live later, so check back this afternoon to see if HP sets its PC business free.
