Veteran radio man will jump to TV for ‘dream job’ on Sportsnet

It’s now available Canada. The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G can now be purchased online and in-stores from both Bell and Virgin. Bell states on their site that “The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G is truly an amazing superphone”… this comes packed with Android 2.3, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED plus display that has a resolution of 480 x 800, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera that can take 1080p HD videos, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi and ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 8 devices. Overseas this thin beast of a phone has sold 3 million units in just over 50 days, us Canadians will certainly add to this number too. As for price points, the no contract price is $599.95; 1-year contract is $574.95; 2-year is $549.95 and 3-year for $169.95.

Back in April, when we put the PlayBook through its paces, we were disappointed to find it lacked the previously promised, and eventually teased, Android Player. Well, the time has finally come — at least for those of you, who don’t mind getting your hands, and tablet, dirty with leaked software. The folks over at n4bb snatched up a beta version of the program, which brings nearly 250,000 little-green-monster apps to the BB slab, but point out that it’s got its drawbacks. Aside from altogether lacking a back button, this build apparently has some lagging issues. If you’re the adventurous type, however, you can download and sideload the appropriate file by clicking on the source link below. But if your PlayBook gets covered in all sorts of leaky beta goo, don’t come running to us — it is unofficial after all.

Rogers hasn’t exactly made a lot of fans with the rather draconian caps on its cable modem service. But the company wants you to know, it has heard your complaints and doesn’t want to cut you off from your precious, bandwidth-intensive Netflix streams. That’s why it’s raising the limits on its three top tier plans later this month. Extreme subscribers are getting a bump from 80GB to 100GB, Extreme Plus users from 125GB to 150GB, and Ultimate customers from 175GB to 250GB. The company is even boosting speeds, you know, to help you make more efficient use of that newly raised data ceiling — from 15Mbps to 24Mbps for the Extreme and 25Mbps to 32Mbps for Extreme Plus. It’s always nice to see a company listen to its customers, and come on, data caps aren’t all that bad.

Both Bell and Virgin started to sell the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II 4G early, Bell had lineups today at their flagship Toronto Eaton Centre location and Virgin opened the floodgates online. This 4.3-inch Android 2.3.3 powered beast of a phone is also being released by SaskTel. Those customers who want this device will have to unfortunately wait until Friday to pick one up. This news was confirmed via Twitter earlier today: “The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G will be available from SaskTel starting Friday! Call your favourite store or dealer for availability”. No word on how many devices will be allocated to SaskTel so it’s best you start calling and reserving one if possible.

We’ve written about Damn You Auto Correct before, namely because it managed to eloquently capture the modern zeitgeist of text-based communication failures. I mean this stuff sucks! Just this morning I sent a dm to the wrong person because of Seesmic autofill text and just two hours later had to delete and resend a tweet because of a typo GAH. Fact is the more we type the more chances we have to typo (have you read my posts ever?) and the collective anxiety surrounding these moments of embarrassment has contributed to the popularity of the blog ‘Damn You Auto Correct.’

Just how popular is Damn You Auto Correct? Well since its launch last October the site has cumulatively received almost 300 million page views and, in celebration, has posted a list of the 15 most popular Damn You Auto Correct submissions of all time. At #1 is the fine specimen to the left, edging out my personal favorite The Accident at # 6.

Pophangover CEO Jillian Madison tells me that The Worst Possible Thing To Text To Mom has received over 2,622,164 page views since its posting on April 17th. When asked how many of the top 15 submissions were fake (some of them really are too good to be true, and then there’s this) Madison replied, “I honestly don’t think most of them are fake. Sure, a few people know about these lame text generators, but I don’t think the average DYAC reader/submitter has a clue they exist.” Okay, then.

Madison says that she reads through over 500 Auto Correct fail submissions a day and insists that she can tell a fake when she sees one, “You can tell the fakes because the font is slightly different, the Verizon is blurry, and the green in the bubbles is more vivid.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA okay hey, it’s a living.

Over the years, we’ve expanded Gmail’s communication abilities by allowing you to make voice and video calls to other computers and more recently call phones. Until now, though, you were limited to making one call at a time. Today we’re excited to relax that restriction and allow you to make or receive multiple calls in Gmail.

If you’re in a call and make a second one, your first call will be put on hold while you talk on your new call. You can switch between calls by pressing the “Resume” button on the call you want to talk on, which will automatically put the previous call on hold.

Receiving incoming calls while you’re in another call is just as easy: you’ll receive a notification of the incoming call and can choose to accept it or not. If you take the new call, the previous call will be put on hold.

Whether you make a second call or not, you can now put any call on hold — useful in case you need to talk to someone in the room or grab something off the stove. Just press the “Hold” button and then “Resume” to start talking again.

This feature works across all call types (voice, video, and phone); the only restriction is that a maximum of two outgoing calls to physical phones can be placed at once.

The number of Android devices officially compatible with the Netflix streaming app has more than doubled in v2.3, growing from 9 to 24. Last night the description was updated with a new list of devices but the actual updated APK only started pushing this afternoon, bringing Netflix not only to the Lenovo tablet announced last night but also to the Droid 3, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Atrix, several Galaxy S phones including the Epic 4G and Fascinate and more. Fragmentation is clearly still an issue for DRM’d apps like this and Hulu Plus, but at least now there’s a growing number of recent superphones supported instead of sitting on the sidelines. Update: As multiple commenters have noted, sideloading the Netflix APK will still work for devices that haven’t yet made the list. We were able to confirm the app works fine on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom, however we’re hearing it’s not up and running on the Tegra 2-based Transformer just yet. The upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9900 will be making the rounds to our Canadian carriers. We’ve already seen this on a few Bell internal docs, plus we hear that TELUS andRogers will be releasing this too. Heck, even Dave Dobbin, Mobilicity CEO, is using this while he treks across Canada in their “We’ll prove it to you Tour”. Now regional carrier SaskTel has tweeted their intentions to bring this touchscreen/QWERTY device to the province. They noted that “We are planning on carrying the Bold 9900 but I don’t know of an exact date at this time”. This is right on track with the internal doc we posted back in May that shows the next Curve, Bold, Torch and Storm. The Bold 9900 is expected to be available late August/early September.
