Whatever you thought you knew about laser tag has just been completely shattered. Because that game that came after the pizza party and before the present opening at all the best 8th grade birthday parties is long gone. Light Strike, its next-gen replacement, includes fingerprint ID, a range of weapon blasts, a health meter, limited ammo, a built-in target—even a grenade launcher and recoiling machine gun. WITH LASERS. On sale later this year, but hopefully not too much later. More »

Detroit Group Raises $50,000 For RoboCop Statue, Mayor Be Damned
Barely a week after Detroit’s mayor tweeted that a RoboCop statue wouldn’t be erected in the city, the Detroit Free-Press is reporting that a group of artists and fans who supported the idea have raised more than $50,000 toward its construction. The group will continue to solicit donations on its Kickstarter page until March 29th. After that, it will determine how much to spend and hire sculptors to build the RoboCop statue. Despite Mayor Dave Bing initially rejecting the idea, the Free-Press claims the Mayor’s office is now working with the group to find a public spot for the statue. If not, the statue will likely end up at an outdoor art space called the Imagination Station.

Motorola Xoom price official: $799 unsubsidized on Verizon, $600 for WiFi-only
There you have it, folks — the exhausting saga of the Xoom‘s pricing has finally been laid to rest by Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha. Reuters reports a $799 levy for the 32GB Honeycomb tablet when bought with 3G (which will be upgraded to 4G) connectivity from Verizon sans subsidies, while Jha is also quoted as saying that a WiFi-only version will set buyers back only $600. The latter price matches the 32GB iPad directly, however the 3G Xoom is $70 more expensive than the Apple alternative. Sanjay failed to say when said pricing or models will become available, but there have been strong indications that pre-orders or reservations will begin tomorrow (at least at Best Buy), with the tablet launching in full on Thursday next week.

Where in the world are my photos?
Posted by Ping Chen, Software Engineer
For some of you, many of your memories are based around a place. It could be a cherished family cabin, an iconic landmark or a trip to an exotic locale. In Picasa Web Albums, you can leverage the GPS technology built into many cameras and mobile phones to tag where your images were taken. This makes sharing images of your trip to Yellowstone even more interesting by showing where inside the park they were taken.
Until today, you could manage the visibility of geographical information at the account level – you chose whether to display location information for your entire account. Now, you can control whether or not to include location information for each individual album rather than at the account level. Whenever you add a new album, location information will not display by default. Existing albums will follow your previous selection. You can easily change this setting for existing and new albums by checking or unchecking the box below the map on your album.
This way, you can show your friends the geographical location of the photos in your Yellowstone album, while keeping the location of a favorite beach your secret.
As always, we’d love to hear what you think. Please share your feedback in our forum.

The search is on for a giant tenth planet hidden in the Oort Cloud [Planet X]
We might just be on the verge of discovering a real Planet X, according to astronomers John Matese and Dan Whitmire. Subtle gravitational influences on comets way out in the Oort Cloud suggest there could be a huge gas giant affecting the other objects, and now NASA’s Wise space telescope has given us the data to determine whether the planet really exists or not. For more on what Tyche might look like, check out The Independent – and for a little healthy skepticism about whether Tyche is really out there, check out Bad Astronomy. More »

Next version of Android will combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb, arrive on a six-month cycle
Eric Schmidt didn’t give a ton of details about the future of Android during his MWC 2011 keynote, but he did drop one interesting tidbit: the next version of Android will “start with an I, be named after a dessert” and combine Gingerbread for phones and Honeycomb for tablets into a cohesive whole. We’ll just go out on a limb and say that he’s talking about Ice Cream, and that we’ll see that Fragments UI construct used to bridge the phone / tablet display size gap. Unfortunately, Eric didn’t say anything about timing — just that updates have been happening on a “six month cycle.” Considering that Honeycomb has yet to officially launch on any devices, we’d say that’s not so long to wait — but of course we’re also dying to know more as soon as possible. We’ll let you know if we hear anything good.

Google demos Android Movie Studio for Honeycomb
Google won’t let anyone take pictures during its MWC 2011 keynote, so you’ll just have to trust us when we say Eric Schmidt just demoed a new video editing application called Movie Studio for Honeycomb tablets. The app was built from the ground up for tablet devices, and it features everything you’d expect: a timeline-style editor, picture effects, soundtrack and audio support, and of course, HD support with uploads to YouTube. Unfortunately we don’t know much else about it, but we’ll be digging for more details, so stay tuned.
Update: We snuck a picture! You can see the timeline and the playback controls — it looks really nice, don’t you think?

Coca-Cola Secret Recipe Outed – Report
Coca-Cola’s recipe is said to be one of the best kept secrets in all the world (particularly now that we all apparently know what goes into a bucket of KFC)–you know, the one that only two people in the world know, so they’re not allowed to fly on the same plane, because if it were to crash, we’d be plunged into an age of Coke-free darkness.
The ingredients used in our beverages are listed on the product labels and many people have tried over time to crack the secret formula of Coca-Cola. That secret combination of ingredients holds a special place in the history and mythology of Coca-Cola -something we continue to celebrate as we mark our 125th anniversary this year.
Among the ingredients are: alcohol, orange oil, lemon oil, nutmeg oil, and cinnamon.
Unstoppable: the first Blu-ray film with Android-compatible Digital Copy
It’s a little shocking that it’s taken this long to get a Digital Copy that’s compatible with Android, but clearly it’s the week of shackles being broken. Just yesterday, Qualcomm announced that all future Snapdragon devices would be cleared for Netflix streaming, and now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is announcing that its impending Unstoppable launch will allow Android users to watch the flick on the go. By enabling the transfer through BD Live, it marks the first time that this has been possible with Google’s mobile OS, though it should be noted that consumers will need the disc itself, a WiFi-connected BD player, Android 1.6 or higher and the free PocketBLU app to make the magic happen. Both the movie and app can be downloaded starting today, but here’s the real question: are you willing to invest in a movie just to experience Digital Copy… on Android?
