  • Onkyo blesses 10.1-inch TA117 Android tablet with NVIDIA’s Tegra 250

Lookin’ to get a jump on the rest of the folks, eh Onkyo? Rather than waiting for CES to kick off next week, the aforementioned firm has just let loose its TA117, proving that it’s totally kosher with supporting both Microsoft and Google in the tablet wars. A duo of models will be made available — the TA117C3 and TA117C1 — with both of ’em getting a 10.1-inch touch panel (1024 x 600 resolution), Android 2.2, NVIDIA’s Tegra 250 (1GHz), 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a microSD expansion slot, USB 2.0 connectivity (x2), HDMI out and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. There’s also a docking port to use with an optional stand, and if you’re looking to spot the differences between the two models, the C1 is home to 512MB of DDR2 RAM alongside 8GB of integrated storage, while the C3 doubles up with 1GB of memory and 16GB of NAND. There’s nary a word on price nor release, but we hear Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is now feeling a bit small. If you know what we’re getting at.

  • Samsung Vibrant and Fascinate get Froyo in Canada, hopefully with fewer bugs this time

A quick gander at Samsung’s Canadian support site for the Galaxy S line reveals that two Android 2.2 updates are currently available: one for the Vibrant — offered by Bell, Virgin Mobile, and SaskTel — and one for the Fascinate as sold be Telus. This all follows just a few days after Sammy had to pull the Vibrant’s Froyo update on word that it seemed be killing the internal microSD storage, so hopefully, this build will be just a little more drama-free. Oh, and Samsung had originally said that Telus Fascinate owners would be waiting until next year to upgrade their units, so it’s pretty neat that they were able to rein that in a bit and get it pushed at the tail end of ’10. So have fun, Canadians — you’ve beaten your friends with T-Mobile Vibrants and Verizon Fascinates to the punch on this one, and we encourage you to lord it over them at every opportunity.

    [Thanks, Robert B.]

  • Archos 70 and 101 Internet Tablet review

We’ve seen our fair share of budget tablets from the Augens, Cobys, and Viewsonics of the world over the last six months, but let’s not forget that before everyone and their mother jumped into the cheap-o Android tablet pool, Archos was already in the shallow end with its own sub-$200 tablets. But, while the company was first to market, products like the Archos 5 and 7 Home Tablet certainly weren’t anything to wait in line for — they both packed slow processors, resistive displays, and ran outdated versions of Google’s mobile OS. Whether it was the mediocre reviews or the competition coming up behind them, the French company knew it was time to step it up, and its Archos 70 and 101 attempt to right all those wrongs. The 7- and 10-inch tablet both have Android 2.2, 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processors, and capacitive screens. Oh, and don’t forget the front-facing VGA cameras. With each ringing up at $299, has Archos finally mastered the art of the cheap tablet? Find out in our full review!

  • KinEmote: Kinect gesture control for Boxee and XBMC media centers now available (video)

We’ve seen plenty of Kinect hacks over the last few weeks — trouble is, beyond the initial wow factor they’re just not very useful on a daily basis. That situation just changed, however, with the release of KinEmote, a free public beta that lets Windows users navigate XBMC and Boxee menus using nothing but hand gestures. Better yet, the software is built around OpenNI and NITE middleware from PrimeSense, the company behind the Project Natal reference gear. It certainly looks impressive in the video after the break. Good enough that we suspect many of you will hit up the source link below instead of finishing up your last minute holiday shopping — hey, Santa can wait, this is progress!

  • This is what First Person Shooters Will Look Like in the Future

Graphics are something that always get discussed when talking about shooters. Remember how everyone tried to get their PC to run Crysis? Hell, for at least a year, that was the first question you asked about a new PC: Will it run Crysis?

Now that you have a machine that will run Crysis well, it’s time for the next leap forward in FPS graphics.

YouTube sensation Freddie Wong has become extremely well-known in recent months. He’s made videos of what a real-life aimbot would look like, a special effects laden interpretation of Time Crisis, and now he’s showing us the future of the FPS genre.

Check this out, and realize this: whoever his friend is, letting someone teabag you on YouTube is pretty dedicated.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab – The AnandTech Review

The iPad started shipping in April, and since then it has basically had the tablet market to itself. Literally, in the six months after the iPad’s release, it didn’t have a single direct competitor. Dell launched the Streak shortly after the iPad, but the Streak was a 5” unit that was significantly smaller than the iPad. In the 7-11” tablet market, Apple has been the only real player.

But that all changed when Samsung launched its 7” Galaxy Tab last month. On paper, the Galaxy Tab is essentially a jumbo-sized implementation of the Galaxy S smartphone platform. You’re looking at the same A8-based 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and PowerVR SGX 540 graphics chip, the same 512MB RAM, the same lightweight plastic build, and pretty similar industrial design. The screen has been upsized, from the 4” WVGA unit in the Galaxy S to a 7” WSVGA panel. As the first Android-based slate to come from a major manufacturer, it’s a very important device, and not just to test Android’s viability as a tablet platform.

So in the first of our Android tablet reviews, we have Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Read on to find out how it stacks up against the iPad and whether it can put a dent into Apple’s current domination of the tablet market.
