Facebook outs Timeline, gives your profile page a new outfit
Well, Mark’s just unveiled Facebook’s new look at his f8 keynote, and he’s calling it Timeline. The idea is to make it easier to see what you want to see from your past, by placing a, surprise surprise, timeline on the right edge of your profile page that breaks down your content by year and month. It’s a much more visual experience than Facebook’s previous threads, and Timeline Views allow you to filter the content by photos, where you’ve been (courtesy of Bing maps innovation), and much more. You can also add apps, “likes”, and all of your other content in neatly organized panes on your profile page to make it easier to “tell the story of your life” in the way you want to — including the ability to go back and add stuff to your timeline after the fact, no flux capacitor required.

It’s a much more visual experience than Facebook’s previous incarnation, and Timeline Views allow you to filter the content by photos, locations (courtesy of Bing maps integration) and much more. Timeline’s going live in beta immediately for some, and a broader roll-out will be happening over the next few weeks. Get ready people, Facebook’s future is here.
Update: Facebook’s Timeline promo vid is now embedded after the break.

comScore: “Mobile Banking Up 21% Since March 2011″

Research firm comScore came out with some Canadian mobile stats a couple months back, all based on March 2011 numbers. At the time they stated that “12.3 percent of Canadian mobile subscribers accessed banking. During the CWTA Wireless Showcase comScore presented some updated numbers and the trend continued – mobile usage is increasing. You can see some of the previous stats we posted here, mainly about OS market share and how Apple, RIM, HTC and Samsung are all battling it out.
Using your mobile device as a “wallet” will be an everyday experience in 2012, some are adopting it early and doing the basic transactions or using a mobile banking app. comScore stated that since March “Mobile Baking is up 21%”, leading to believe that 33.3% of mobile subscribers use a mobile banking app (based on 20,111,000 subscribers). The most used mobile app is TD Canada Trust with 26%, followed by RBC (21%), CIBC (16%), BMO (10%) and Scotia Bank (10%). Not surprising, Canadians use iOS and the iPhone the most to access their account and perform basic functions, followed by RIM and the BlackBerry OS, specifically on the Torch 9800 (touchscreen/QWERTY keyboard) and Google’s Android OS is creeping up in popularity.

This ancient bridge is engineered from living trees [Video]
In Meghalaya, India, locals have to deal with heavy rainfall and frequent flash floods along the many streams that supply water to the area. And yet this forbidding environment has given rise to an architectural practice that sounds like something out of environmental science fiction: for at least a thousand years, the people of this area have been building bridges using the root systems of rubber trees.
Windows 8 ditches ’80s BIOS boot for streamline UEFI
Every time we reboot our computers, that scrolling code takes us right back to the days of War Games and Tab. Bringing us into the 21st century, Microsoft has decided to ditch the old boot by beautifying the whole experience with a graphical menu. Windows 8 will shift from the standard fugly BIOS system to a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) — giving users a high resolution logo and a graphical menu to gaze upon while powering up their PC. Besides just looking better, the menu lets you boot to a different disc, OS or USB drive using pretty pictures and words as prompts. If you’re into a little self-inflicted eye torture, you can always pull up the command prompt menu from nightmares past. Check out the throwback video tribute to the computers of yesteryear after the break.
Update: Just to clarify, Microsoft isn’t actually building flashing mobos, but it’s pushing towards UEFI to achieve “significantly richer capabilities” while booting.
