The Sony Tablet, aka the Sony S1 or Tablet S, is coming to Canada and it looks like the release date could either be September 14th or 15th. According to this invite that Sony Canada sent out states that “The new Sony Tablet is about to arrive in Canada. As a valued customer, we would like YOU to see it first!”. No details on pricing or where we’ll be able to pick one up, but most likely from the Sony Style Stores and big box stores like Best Buy and Future Shop (unconfirmed). This tablet comes with Android 3.1 Honeycomb, 9.4-inch touchscreen display (resolution of 1280×800), Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, PlayStation certified, Wi-Fi, and DLNA. Apparently there will be a 16GB and 32GB models and no insight if there will be a 3G/4G version.

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a “chunky design” isn’t bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba’s expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year’s model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba’s new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.

Android: I’ve often given my son my phone to play Angry Birds, and at least twice he’s managed to delete contacts or emails. Android Parental Control helps users lockdown their phones so kids can only use apps that you have approved; an admin password is required to access any restricted app. Additionally, the app can be set to launch as soon as the phone boots so clever kids can’t get around the restrictions by rebooting the phone. Saskatchewan will not be split in two when its new area code comes in – and existing 306 customers won’t have to switch, the CRTC has confirmed.
A huge underground river appears to be flowing thousands of metres beneath the Amazon River, Brazilian scientists said Thursday.
Saskatchewan is joining other Canadian locaitons and will be adopting a new area code soon. The CRTC already announced 10-digit local call dialing is coming February 25th, 2013, but now says residents can expect to see area code 639 be introduced as well. the 639 area code will be officially implemented May 25th, 2013. The reason for the new area code is similar to what Toronto and BC are experiencing, phone numbers are running out. According to the Canadian Numbering Administrator “Saskatchewan is expected to run out of telephone numbers by August 2013″.

Instead, you’re able to configure Exchange/Active Sync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV and CardDAV accounts, which suggests that RIM is switching to the same integrated email, contacts and calendar solutions as everyone else. Of course, it could be that the BES/BIS simply isn’t enabled on this particular device, or that it’ll be added in a later version of the OS. Then again, we can’t help but recall those Colt rumors which also hinted that RIM’s in-house service would be incompatible with QNX.
Another juicy tidbit: a second screen shot after the break reveals a green robot icon in the far left. So, even if its Android integration has been delayed, at least it hasn’t been forgotten.

The Toshiba Thrive quietly found its way into Canadian retailers. This Android 3.1 tablet comes in 3 variations and price points: 8GB ($399.99), 16GB ($429.99) and 32GB ($499.99). When Toshiba announced the Thrive would be coming to Canada they stated different pricing: 8GB was $429; 16GB was $479 and the 32GB version was $579. So the price reduction is welcomed and Toshiba possibly is taking a note from the HP TouchPad.
Specs of the Thrive has it coming with a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 10.1-inch touchscreen display (resolution of 1280 x 800), Wi-Fi, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5 megapixel. This comes in black but the back covers can be swapped out in various colours: Blue Moon, Raspberry Fusion, Lavender Bliss, Silvery Sky and Green Apple.
