Google ‘winding down’ Labs, likely due to meddling older sister

Google Labs, that breeding ground for the wacky, sublime, and sometimes useful experiments that Mountain View’s scooter-loving employees are so fond of, is getting ready to “wind down.” The software giant announced today that the experimental forum for testing out potential features is being sidelined, in order for the company to focus on bigger picture ideas. Some of the more useful experimentation for properties like Calendar and Gmail will stick around, as will the Labs experiments that eventually made their way into the Android market. Google has promised to keep us all in the loop during the transition, so perhaps we can pick up a few secondhand test tubes for our own collections.

SaskTel launching the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G on Friday

Both Bell and Virgin started to sell the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II 4G early, Bell had lineups today at their flagship Toronto Eaton Centre location and Virgin opened the floodgates online. This 4.3-inch Android 2.3.3 powered beast of a phone is also being released by SaskTel. Those customers who want this device will have to unfortunately wait until Friday to pick one up. This news was confirmed via Twitter earlier today: “The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G will be available from SaskTel starting Friday! Call your favourite store or dealer for availability”. No word on how many devices will be allocated to SaskTel so it’s best you start calling and reserving one if possible.

And The Most Popular ‘Damn You Auto Correct’ Text Of All Time Is …

We’ve written about Damn You Auto Correct before, namely because it managed to eloquently capture the modern zeitgeist of text-based communication failures. I mean this stuff sucks! Just this morning I sent a dm to the wrong person because of Seesmic autofill text and just two hours later had to delete and resend a tweet because of a typo GAH. Fact is the more we type the more chances we have to typo (have you read my posts ever?) and the collective anxiety surrounding these moments of embarrassment has contributed to the popularity of the blog ‘Damn You Auto Correct.’

Just how popular is Damn You Auto Correct? Well since its launch last October the site has cumulatively received almost 300 million page views and, in celebration, has posted a list of the 15 most popular Damn You Auto Correct submissions of all time. At #1 is the fine specimen to the left, edging out my personal favorite The Accident at # 6.

Pophangover CEO Jillian Madison tells me that The Worst Possible Thing To Text To Mom has received over 2,622,164 page views since its posting on April 17th. When asked how many of the top 15 submissions were fake (some of them really are too good to be true, and then there’s this) Madison replied, “I honestly don’t think most of them are fake. Sure, a few people know about these lame text generators, but I don’t think the average DYAC reader/submitter has a clue they exist.” Okay, then.

Madison says that she reads through over 500 Auto Correct fail submissions a day and insists that she can tell a fake when she sees one, “You can tell the fakes because the font is slightly different, the Verizon is blurry, and the green in the bubbles is more vivid.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA okay hey, it’s a living.

Make multiple calls in Gmail

Posted by Richard Dunn, Software Engineer

Over the years, we’ve expanded Gmail’s communication abilities by allowing you to make voice and video calls to other computers and more recently call phones. Until now, though, you were limited to making one call at a time. Today we’re excited to relax that restriction and allow you to make or receive multiple calls in Gmail.

If you’re in a call and make a second one, your first call will be put on hold while you talk on your new call. You can switch between calls by pressing the “Resume” button on the call you want to talk on, which will automatically put the previous call on hold.

Receiving incoming calls while you’re in another call is just as easy: you’ll receive a notification of the incoming call and can choose to accept it or not. If you take the new call, the previous call will be put on hold.

Whether you make a second call or not, you can now put any call on hold — useful in case you need to talk to someone in the room or grab something off the stove. Just press the “Hold” button and then “Resume” to start talking again.

This feature works across all call types (voice, video, and phone); the only restriction is that a maximum of two outgoing calls to physical phones can be placed at once.

Netflix app on Android updated to work on 24 models including Galaxy S, Droid 3 (update: tablets too!)

The number of Android devices officially compatible with the Netflix streaming app has more than doubled in v2.3, growing from 9 to 24. Last night the description was updated with a new list of devices but the actual updated APK only started pushing this afternoon, bringing Netflix not only to the Lenovo tablet announced last night but also to the Droid 3, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Atrix, several Galaxy S phones including the Epic 4G and Fascinate and more. Fragmentation is clearly still an issue for DRM’d apps like this and Hulu Plus, but at least now there’s a growing number of recent superphones supported instead of sitting on the sidelines. We’ve got the updated list of devices after the break, hit the source link to download the app from the Android Market.

Update: As multiple commenters have noted, sideloading the Netflix APK will still work for devices that haven’t yet made the list. We were able to confirm the app works fine on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom, however we’re hearing it’s not up and running on the Tegra 2-based Transformer just yet. Itching for some Watch Instantly on your Honeycomb tablet? Check XDA-Developers for a download link.

Update 2: Alex wrote in to let us know that things are now operational on the Transformer, too. Check out xda-developers for the details.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

SaskTel: “We are planning on carrying the Bold 9900″

The upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9900 will be making the rounds to our Canadian carriers. We’ve already seen this on a few Bell internal docs, plus we hear that TELUS andRogers will be releasing this too. Heck, even Dave Dobbin, Mobilicity CEO, is using this while he treks across Canada in their “We’ll prove it to you Tour”. Now regional carrier SaskTel has tweeted their intentions to bring this touchscreen/QWERTY device to the province. They noted that “We are planning on carrying the Bold 9900 but I don’t know of an exact date at this time”. This is right on track with the internal doc we posted back in May that shows the next Curve, Bold, Torch and Storm. The Bold 9900 is expected to be available late August/early September.

Tango brings video calling to desktop PCs — giant baby head not included

Back when we first laid eyes on Tango, the startup was sticking strictly to mobile, serving up free video calls over 3G, 4G, and WiFi to both iOS and Android devices (with front-facing cameras, of course). Now the company’s thinking big — quite literally — with the announcement that it plans to bring its video calling service to PCs sometime later this summer. As of now, it looks as if this will be a Windows-only affair, and will remain free of charge — as before, you won’t need to register to get your videophone on. We’ve yet to see Tango at work on the big screen, but from what we gather from the press stills, the desktop edition will bring a bit of the old Apple to your PC. Full PR after the break.

DeathFrance 3000 About To Hit It’s Flesh Quota

While we here at Мишка are prone to posting up content having to do with bicycles from time to time, it’s rare that we ever tackle the wide world of competitive cycle racing. Considering the gruesome events that have been taking place at this year’s Tour De France however, I’ve had rethink our normal stance on the topic. A series of particularly horrifying images and videos have started to make the rounds stateside lately, that not only rule, but reveal the French Bicycle Superbowl to be a bit more grueling than we ever thought before.

The folks over at Deadspin have been keeping us Yanks up to date surrounding the events of the million mile race (that’s an estimate), by kindly focusing on all the various forms of carnage that have occurred over the past month.  Deadspin editor Barry Petchesky anointed this year’s event with the fitting nickname DeathFrance 3000 pretty early on, when rider Maxim Iglisky clipped a spectator in a yellow frock during the very first stage of the race. This small love tap eventually went on to cause a massive bicycle pile-up, which really set a pretty gnarly tone for the rest of the event. The entire tour wraps up this coming Sunday, but I’m willing to bet that it already ranks among the bloodiest.

During the 14th stage of the race, Laurens Ten Dam of the Netherlands, who can be seen at the top of the post, took a trip over his handlebars, planting his face firmly into a ditch. The resulting images produced by the incident are the stuff that nightmares are made of. Ten Dam strapped an ace bandage around his melon upon crashing, which essentially kept his mug from detaching from the rest of his skull, and saddled up for the rest of the ride, Aerosmith-style. While his vibrant blue and orange ensemble may direct your attention away from this guy’s train-wreck-of-a-face for just a moment’s time, it appears there was very little seperating the rider from a Hannibal Lecter victim.

I suppose I should also mention the car/bike that crash which eventually jettisoned a whole cadre of cyclists into a barbed wire fence. You can check out all that damage in the video and image above. I would be doing bicycle/injury enthusiasts a huge disservice if I didn’t at least quickly touch on this wreck.

Anyway, I’ve started to wonder why the Tour De France hasn’t really caught on in the ol’ U S of A. People attend Nascar races to drink beer out of coolers and watch things crash into other things, right? I don’t see why this principle can’t also be applied to bicycle racing. If this post changes the mind of one short-sighted Dale Jr. fan, then maybe I’ll have done my job.

Women’s topless court victory 20 years later
