Mobile Gaming by the Numbers [Infographic]
Billions of dollars a year are spent on mobile gaming; check out this infographic to see where the billions go, the rising trend of freemium games, and the who the most active mobile gamers are. Some of the figures in the chart are fairly predictable, such as the increase revenue pulled in by in-game upgrades and purchases (it’s so easy to spend $0.99 more to get that edge). Others surprised us; only 84% of tablet owners play games? We thought the whole purpose of the tablet movement was to disguise how much people wanted to goof off with a touch screen computer?

ASUS Eee Slider update: 32GB model in September, 3G edition in 2012
You know, it wouldn’t even bother us if it didn’t look so amazing. But alas, the Eee Slider from ASUS is easily one of the most anticipated Honeycomb tablets around, and our unending love for the since-departed HTC Advantage ensures that the flame for this guy will keep burning, too. Just a few weeks after hearing from ASUS’ UK branch that the Slider was being delayed until ‘autumn,’ in flies word from The Netherlands that we may be able to fix our gaze on September. Based on reports from Tablets Magazine, the 16GB model will be canned altogether in favor of a lone 32 gigger, which should sell for €499 across the pond. As for the 3G-enabled variant? We aren't apt to see that surface until Q1 2012. It's tough to pinpoint the reason for the holdup, but our guess is software — earlier in the week, a hands-on video emerged showcasing the Slider with Android 3.1, paying particular attention to the newfound USB accessory support. Have a gander at the video just past the break, and feel free to console one another in comments.Update: Seems that ASUS’ Polish arm thinks that the 16GB model may ship in that corner of the world. Hmm… maybe these folks should start talking to one another.

Ford bringing SYNC systems to base trim levels, drops from $395 to $295
Ford’s been pushing SYNC in its autos since 2007, but you wouldn’t have known it had you opted for the base trim level on your ride. Thankfully for those who appreciate the basics, that’s a-changing. The automaker is aiming to entice more potential owners by offering the voice-activated infotainment systems across all levels for $295 (down from $395, where optional), starting with its 2012 Edge and Explorer models. To sweeten the deal even further, it’ll also become standard on SEL variants for the first time — before, it was a luxury previously reserved for Limited and Sport. Ford plans to roll out the system across its entire lineup in three years time, bringing the 2013 Ford Taurus, Focus, Escape and Flex into the fold. You know, options for all of you who aren’t hip on the all-American, gas-guzzling SUV. Full PR past the break.Continue reading Ford bringing SYNC systems to base trim levels, drops from $395 to $295

HTC Flyer launching in Canada for $499.99

It’s been anticipated for months that the Wi-Fi version of the HTC Flyer will be available to Canadians, but we can finally say this tablet is actually coming really soon. We’re still waiting on hearing what the official launch date is but HTC’s first Android tablet will hit retail locations across Canada for $499.99 outright. From what we understand the Flyer will come with OS 2.3.3 Gingerbread, have a 7-inch display, 1.5 GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera with a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video calling. No word yet on the complete distribution but most likely it’ll be at all the usual retail outlets and big box stores.More soon!

Logitech officially drops Revue price to $99 today, clarifies ‘more returns than sales’ remark
Google TV not worth 300 bones to ya? How’s about a cool Benjamin? As promised, Logitech has slashed the price of its Revue set-top box from $299 to $99 on its own site and at retailers like Best Buy, giving prospective customers something awfully tempting to consider alongside the prospect of running Honeycomb on their TV right away. Oh, and the much-reported nugget from its earnings about “returns exceeding sales”? It should probably be noted that wasn’t about returns from end users, which the company claims “have averaged at levels comparable to other Logitech products”, but from the distributors and retailers it sells most of its hardware to. So, you in, or are you still holding out for the 90 percent off sale that may or may not ever materialize?

DNA-based artificial neural network is a primitive brain in a test tube (video)
Many simpler forms of life on this planet, including some of our earliest ancestors, don’t have proper brains. Instead they have networks of neurons that fire in response to stimuli, triggering reactions. Scientists from Caltech have actually figured out how to create such a primitive pre-brain using strands of DNA. Researchers, led by Lulu Qian, strung together DNA molecules to create bio-mechanical circuits. By sequencing the four bases of our genetic code in a particular way, they were able to program it to respond differently to various inputs. To prove their success the team quizzed the organic circuit, essentially playing 20 questions, feeding it clues to the identity of a particular scientist using more DNA strands. The artificial neural network nailed answer every time. Check out the PR and pair of videos that dig a little deeper into the experiment after the break.

System Administrator Appreciation Day is here, show them some love (or suffer the consequences)
Last year, on July 29th, we asked you to show a little love to your sysadmin because, without them, our world would probably come to a screeching halt. We suggested a card, or at least a polite nod in the hallway. Instead, you went all out and actually gave them a bit of raise. That doesn’t mean you can let System Administrator Appreciation Day slip by this year without acknowledgment, however. We’re not saying you’ve got to outdo yourselves and get them some sort of super yacht — a simple thanks will do. But, they probably wouldn’t mind a repeat of last year’s gift either.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet gets an August 23rd release
Lenovo had a bit of an issue saving the date for its summer tablet launch, but no longer. Confirmed via a product page on the company’s site, its Honeycomb-flavored ThinkPad Tablet will finally hit retailers’ shelves on August 23rd. If you’re not into waiting that long, you can always snag the IdeaPad K1 — we hear Lisa Stansfield recommends it.
[Thanks, Jeff]

New Google Search experience for tablets
(Cross-posted on the Inside Search blog)As part of our effort to evolve the Google design and experience, we’ve improved the www.google.com search experience on tablets. We’ve simplified the layout of search results pages and increased the size of page contents like text, buttons and other touch targets to make it faster and easier to browse and interact with search results in portrait or landscape view.
The search button located below the search box provides quick access to specific types of results like Images, Videos, Places, Shopping and more. Just tap to open the search menu and select an option to see results in one category.
For image results, we focused on improvements that enhance the viewing experience such as enlarged image previews, continuous scroll, and faster loading of image thumbnails.
This improved search experience is rolling out in the coming days to iPad and Android 3.1+ tablets across 36 languages. Give it a try by going to www.google.com in your tablet’s browser.
